Have You Ever Stopped to Ask What Success Means to You?
July 2026
One thing I’ve noticed in coaching lately is that many people spend years trying to become successful, only to realise they never stopped to define success for themselves.
They’ve worked hard.
They’ve achieved goals.
They’ve ticked the boxes.
And yet, something still feels missing.
Not because they’ve failed.
But because they quietly inherited someone else’s idea of what life was supposed to look like.
Success can become something we chase without ever questioning where we’re headed.
A bigger role.
More money.
More productivity.
More achievement.
And while there’s nothing wrong with ambition, I’ve found that burnout, dissatisfaction and feeling “stuck” often arise when we’re climbing a ladder we never consciously chose.
The question isn’t:
“Am I getting there?”
It’s:
“Is ‘there’ actually where I want to go?”
Redefining Success
For some people, success might look like growing a business.
For others, it might mean slowing down.
Having more time with family.
Living with less stress.
Creating meaningful work.
Feeling more present.
Having space to breathe.
There is no universal definition.
The important thing is that it feels true for you.
Signs You May Be Living Someone Else’s Version of Success
- You feel exhausted despite achieving a lot.
- You constantly move the goalposts.
- You struggle to enjoy what you’ve already built.
- You feel guilty when you rest.
- You secretly wonder, “Is this all there is?”
- You crave more peace, balance or meaning, but don’t know where to start.
A Question Worth Sitting With
Rather than asking yourself:
“How do I get there faster?”
Try asking:
“If nobody else’s expectations mattered, what would success look like for me?”
Because perhaps the goal isn’t to become more successful.
Perhaps it’s to become more honest.
And sometimes, that changes everything.
If you’re navigating a life transition, burnout, or simply questioning what comes next, coaching can offer a space to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and define success on your own terms.
