2024: Setting Intentions, not just Resolutions.

As we embrace the fresh start that a new year brings, many of us are drawn to the tradition of making resolutions. While resolutions are often goal-oriented and focused on specific outcomes, this year, I invite you to consider a more holistic approach: setting intentions.
WHY SET INTENTIONS?
Intentions differ from resolutions in that they focus on the present journey rather than a distant outcome. They are about aligning your heart, mind, and soul with values and aspirations that are important to you, creating a compass to guide your daily actions and decisions.
HOW TO SET INTENTIONS THAT ALIGN WITH YOUR BODY’S WISDOM
- Reflect and Connect: Begin with a period of reflection. Drop in to a 5 minute meditation. Set up a cosy space, somewhere quiet, gentle take some deep breaths, and connect with your body. Pay attention to how you feel physically and emotionally. Think about your deepest desires, dreams and changes you’d like for this year.
- Identify Core Values: Think about your core values. What truly matters to you in your life? Your intentions should resonate with these values, whether it’s health, peace, love, or growth.
- Be Specific, Yet Open: Formulate your intentions in a specific way, but also leave room for flexibility. For instance, rather than a rigid goal like “lose 5kg,” consider an intention like “nurture my body with healthy choices and respect its needs.”
- Incorporate into Daily Life: An intention isn’t a one-time statement; it’s a daily practice. Find small ways to incorporate your intentions into your everyday life. This could be as simple as starting your day with a positive affirmation that aligns with your intention.
- Listen to Your Body: Your body has inherent wisdom about what it needs to thrive. If your intention is to become more active, pay attention to how different forms of movement feel in your body. Choose what makes you feel vibrant and energized.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate when your actions align with your intentions. This reinforces positive patterns and keeps you motivated.
- Be Kind to Yourself: Some days will be easier than others. Setting intentions is about growth, not perfection. Be compassionate with yourself on tougher days.
- Create a Vision Board: After identifying your intentions, bring them to life visually by creating a vision board. You can do this physically on paper or create one digitally on something like Canva. This is a powerful tool for manifesting your aspirations and keeping them in clear view. Gather images, quotes, and symbols that represent your goals and values. Assemble these elements in a creative way on your board. This visual representation serves as a daily reminder and source of inspiration, aligning your thoughts and actions with your desired future. Every time you look at your vision board, you reinforce your intentions and the positive changes you want to bring into your life.
By setting intentions that honour your body’s wisdom and innate needs, you create a powerful foundation for a year filled with personal growth, health, and well-being. Let this year be about being true to yourself and embracing the journey of becoming the best version of you.
