What Else Is Here? The Small Question That’s Changing How I Experience My Life
Some mornings, I wake up and within seconds my mind is already searching for a problem to solve.
The email I haven’t replied to.
The conversation I’m worried about.
The relationship that isn’t where I want it to be.
A decision I haven’t made yet.
It’s almost automatic.
Some part of me believes that if I can just solve the next thing, then I’ll be able to relax.
For a long time, I thought this was simply being responsible. Productive. Prepared.
But lately, I’ve started noticing something.
The list never ends.
As soon as one problem is solved, another quietly takes its place. If I wait until everything feels resolved before I let myself experience peace, I’ll be waiting for a very long time.
The Question I’ve Been Asking Instead
Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a different way of beginning my day.
Before I move towards whatever feels urgent, I pause and ask myself one simple question:
What else is here?
Almost immediately, my attention begins to widen.
The warmth of my tea.
Morning light streaming through the window.
Sunday curled up beside me.
A friend I’m meeting for coffee.
A book I’m excited to keep reading.
The apartment that finally feels like home.
None of these things make the uncertainty disappear.
The unanswered email still exists.
The difficult conversation still needs to happen.
The future is still uncertain.
But those aren’t the only things that are true.
Your Attention Shapes Your Experience
Our nervous systems naturally orient towards problems. It’s one of the ways we’ve evolved to stay safe.
But when every morning begins by scanning for what’s missing, unresolved or uncertain, we can slowly lose sight of everything that’s already supporting us.
Not because life is all sunshine and positivity.
But because our attention becomes so narrow that we stop noticing the moments that are quietly nourishing us every day.
The warmth.
The beauty.
The connection.
The safety.
The ordinary moments that make up a meaningful life.
We Don’t Have to Ignore the Hard Things
This isn’t about pretending everything is okay.
The hard things deserve our attention too.
Relationships need tending.
Decisions need making.
Grief needs feeling.
Conversations need having.
But they don’t deserve all of our attention.
We can hold space for what’s difficult while also allowing ourselves to experience what’s beautiful.
Both can exist at the same time.
A Gentle Practice
Tomorrow morning, before reaching for your phone or mentally running through your to-do list, pause for just a moment.
Ask yourself:
What else is here?
Maybe it’s your first sip of coffee.
The softness of your doona.
The sound of birds outside.
Someone you love.
A home that keeps you safe.
A body that’s carrying you through another day.
You don’t need to force gratitude or convince yourself everything is perfect.
Simply notice what is already here alongside the uncertainty.
Because where we place our attention is where we experience our life.
And sometimes, shifting that attention by just 10% can change the entire feel of the day.
Gentle Reflection
- Where does my attention naturally go when I wake up?
- What beautiful thing might I be overlooking because my mind is focused on what feels unresolved?
- How could I give 10% more attention to what feels good and is already here?
Perhaps that’s enough for today.
